Kulapati K. M. Munshi

(December 30, 1887

February 8, 1971)

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an internationally reputed institution dedicated to the promotion of education and culture, is a charitable public trust founded by Dr. K.M. Munshi a far sighted visionary and practical idealist, along with three of his close associates on November 7, 1938 on the auspicious Kartik Sud Purnima with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi.


The Bhavan believes that there are elements in all cultures which transcends all barriers and knits people together. Its ideal is: Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: “The world is One Family”. Its motto is Aa no bhadraah kratavo yantu vishwatah: “Let noble thoughts come to us from every side”.


The main purpose of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is to provide a modern bridge to span the past, the present and the future, built on strong foundation of the fundamental values of life.

Chennai Kendra

 

The Chennai Kendra was the second kendra to be set up after the Delhi Kendra. The Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra was established in 1958, with the blessings of Paramacharya, His Holiness Shri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. The Kendra had its first Executive Committee meeting in the Syndicate Room of the Madras University under the chairmanship of the distinguished educationalist Dr. A. Lakshmana Swamy Mudaliar. The present premises of East Mada Street, Mylapore was inaugurated by the President of India Shri V.V. Giri on September 2, 1972. Since then the Kendra has been marching ahead with glorious contribution towards cultural activities and rich Indian heritage

The Kendra celebrated Golden Jubilee in the year 2009. True to the ideals of the Bhavan, The Chennai Kendra is promoting and propagating the Performing Arts and rich Indian heritage. The Kendra serves as an excellent platform for celebrated artiste and talent promotion for aspiring artiste. The Kendra has air conditioned library and conduct courses for a variety of cultural discipline like Vocal Music, Bharatanatyam, Yoga and Sanskrit Classes.



The activities of the Kendra are conducted in three different places in the City:
(i) Mylapore – Main Kendra Complex, (ii) Kilpauk (iii) T.Nagar Sub Centre

These are a list of Units under the Chennai Kendra
1.Mylapore – Main Kendra Complex
  1. Bhavan’s Dr. Preetha Reddy Auditorium (Air Conditioned)

  2. Bhavans Vishwanath Trivedi Sabagraha (Air Conditioned)

  3. An airconditioned library is functioning in the kendra premises. And it has a huge and varied collection on Hindu Culture.

  4. Bhavan conducts Fine Arts Classes for Bharatanatyam, Carnatic Music (Vocal), Instruments like Veena, Violin, Key Board, Sitar, Tabla, Mridangam, and Yogasanas / Meditation .

  5. Bhavan also offers certificate courses on computer

  6. The Kendra is coaching candidates for Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachara Sabha Examinations.

  7. The week-end classes on Upanishads, Vivek Choodamani, Vishnu Sahasranamam, etc conducted by an eminent scholar is very popular.


2.Kilpauk
  1. Bhavans Rajaji Vidyashram.

    The Kendra is running one of the prestigious schools in Chennai “Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram” at Kilpauk.

    Having blossomed from humble beginings, Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram which began in 1977, is today a prestigious learning centre managed by the Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra. The institution boasts of a spacious campus in Kilpauk, which was donated by Shri.V.Pattabhiram a distinguished citizen of India.

    The school situated in idyllic surroundings provides an environment ideal for scholastic acheivement with character building and exposure to indian values and tradition.

    The Vidyashram is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi and has a student strength of about 3200 students from LKG to Grade XII.

    At the Vidyashram the endeavour is to make education alive, challenging and attractive to children, to make it purposeful, imaginative and devoid of drudgery.

3.T.Nagar Sub Centre

 

The centre conducts various classes on Fine Arts – Veena, Keyboard, Devotional Music, Carnatic Music. And also classes on Yoga and Computers. The centre also runs a Balavihar


Bhavan’s Gandhi Institute of Computer Education & Information Technology
